Japanese snack food company Ezaki Glico has launched its first range of beauty products. The skin care products, marketed under the gg brand, is made with the company’s flagship ingredient glycogen, a type of carbohydrate that is found on the skin’s surface and helps to keep it moist. The company found a way to synthesise the ingredient from plant starch using a proprietary enzyme, a method which it claims creates purer, higher quality glycogen than than other methods.

According to a report on Nikkei.com, Ezaki Glico plans to turn the gg brand into a ¥1bn a year business in the next five years.

The first two products released under the gg brand are a skin toner and cream.
