ISO standards on packaging and the environment gain momentum
Standards to be commercially available by 2012
A world standard on minimalising the environmental impact of packaging is looking a step nearer following the acceptance of the Draft International Standard texts (DIS) at a working group chaired by NVC Netherlands Packaging Centre. Following this agreement it is expected that the new standards will be available for use by the end of 2012.
The new ISO standards will be used by all companies involved in packaging including designers and manufacturers, recycling companies, retailers, branded goods manufacturers and manufacturers of packaging materials and inks. They will address the optimisation of packaging to minimise its environmental effect, the responsible use of heavy metals and other hazardous materials, the possible reuse of packages and the different modes of recycling.
