Q. How did you become a beauty buyer?
A. In the mid 1970s, I moved to Wells-next-the-Sea in North Norfolk, having worked for Air France at Heathrow for several years. When my daughter started school, I started working in a small local department store where the owner decided to install a beauty department and asked me to head it up. After a while, I wanted to work in a larger, busier environment and took the role of YSL counter manager in Jarrolds in the late 80s. Fortunately, this led to the role of Beauty Buyer.

Q. What specific skills do you need as a beauty buyer?
A. An awareness of innovation and trends, a passion for the industry, good negotiation skills and the ability to be pleasantly tough! Networking and attending industry events is essential, and this is where Copra (Cosmetic & Perfumery Retailers Association) has been invaluable.
