US online retailer boxed.com has lowered prices on women’s personal care and hygiene products affected by ‘pink tax’.

Pink tax is a term used to describe the price hikes that manufacturers place on products designed for women such as razors, body wash, deodorant and shower gel.

It also refers to the luxury tax that is placed on feminine hygiene products such as tampons and sanitary towels.

Research by New York City Department of Consumer Affairs states that women pay 13% more for personal care products overall, which boxed.com stated would cause “significant financial impact” over a woman’s lifetime.

Our research showed that on average, women are paying 108% more for razors; 10% more for body wash; 8% more for deodorant and 5% more for shaving gel

Boxed.com’s Associate Director of Reengagement Marketing, Nitasha Mehta, told Cosmetics Business: “I am so frustrated that feminine hygiene products are still charged with a luxury tax in most states but I am so proud to work for a company that is taking a stand on an issue that is truly affecting their costumers.
