Contract developer and manufacturer of cosmetics and toiletries Herrco says it is now firmly at the forefront of developing natural and organic cosmetic formulations. This follows its recent redevelopment of all the new Ecocert approved products for Balance Me, as well as Ecocert approved lines for a number of other customers.

“We didn’t set out to specialise in natural product development, we just seem to be good at it and we can get a natural product to work as well as synthetics,” says Derek Herrmann, technical sales director at Herrco. “We specialise in development and innovation and have a policy that if a product is not up there with market leading performance we wouldn’t do it.” He says people are actually pulling out of the Soil Association for product performance reasons. “The Soil Association doesn’t allow any cationic ingredients so you can’t make a good hair care product. Ecocert allows guar gum which makes it easier.”

But technologies are improving. “Our competitors will catch up with us sooner or later so we have to keep moving and developing,” says Herrmann. “The only area we have not really done a lot of work on yet is premium skin care [£70 - £80], but we’re now working on this. We’re also doing a lot of work on claim substantiation. The only thing that scares me is the possibility of constantly having to redevelop to meet new criteria.” At the moment, however, this is Ecocert’s prerogative.
