Cosmetics sales rival fashion among French consumers

French households spent approximately €3,000 on maintaining their personal appearance in 2015, with cosmetics spend fast catching up with clothing

french consumers are spending more of their personal budgets on cosmetics and less on clothing, according to French national statistics bureau Insée.

The 2015 figures show that French consumers spent €84bn that year on enhancing their personal appearance – a total of around €3,000 per household.

Here items contributing to ‘personal appearance’ include clothing, cosmetics and accessories such as handbags and watches, along with services such as hair styling and dry cleaning.

While clothing still accounts for the biggest share of the budget, at €1,230 this figure has declined from 66% in 1960 to 41% in 2015. Conversely, the percentage spent on cosmetics
