Joanna Rogers will spearhead the expansion of the retailer's beauty category

German-based e-commerce platform Zalando has hired Boots’ Commercial Director, Beauty to take up its VP Beauty role.

Joanna Rogers joins the e-tailer’s growing beauty category after five years with the Walgreens Boots Alliance’s UK high street chain, where she helmed the business’ expansion to a on-trend beauty destination.

Prior to her appointment with Boots, Rogers served as Managing Director of Philips and acted as Coty’s Global Senior Product Manager for its Health & Beauty category from 1997 to 2003.

"We believe that Joanna’s experience, network and deep understanding of beauty retailing will further boost our ambitions in beauty," the group said in a statement to Cosmetics Business.

"Beauty is and remains a key strategic priority for Zalando. Our aim is to mirror our wide fashion assortment in beauty and internationalise the offer.

In 2019, Zalando, founded by Robert Gentz, David Schneider and Rocket International, embarked on an expansion of its beauty business to new European markets.

In the space of eight months the group had launched its beauty offering in six new markets.

The retailer also seems to have weathered the Covid-19 storm, raising its outlook for the 2020 financial year in October and reporting strong results for its business as more consumers turn to online during the outbreak.

However, in December the group’s co-CEO Rubin Rutter announced his intention to step down from the business after 11 years with the retailer.
