The European Commission has asked the Scientific Committee for Consumer Safety (SCCS) for a full report on the safety of nano-silica in cosmetics.

Currently these compounds are not regulated in the Cosmetic Regulation (1223/2009) but are reported in the Cosing database.

The Commission said it has received 172 notifications for cosmetic products containing nano silica, in the form of silica, hydrated silica, silylate and silica dimethyl silylate.
