Exclusive interview: Katherine Ryan hosts the Pure Beauty Awards 2016

Published: 6-Sep-2016

The comedian reveals her biggest beauty disasters and how she plans to bring some sass to the Pure Beauty Awards

If you own a TV, it is almost guaranteed that you will have seen Katherine Ryan on it. She is one seriously busy lady with regular slots on television panel shows such as QI, Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week and 8 Out of 10 Cats.

The Canadian, with her down-to-earth and candid comedic style, just doesn’t stop working. Even the week we compiled this interview; she was busy performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Pure Beauty can’t wait for her live stand-up set at this year’s awards, but in the meantime she shares a sneak peek as to what she has in store for us on Thursday 27 October at the Savoy Hotel.

What are you most looking forward to about presenting the Pure Beauty Awards 2016?

I like giving people good news. It makes me a hero. I’m also excited to learn about great products and innovations that I may not already know about.

Have you ever had any beauty-related disasters?

I really over-plucked my eyebrows as a teenager. I think you should have a licence to shape eyebrows, even your own.

Does your six year old daughter like dressing up and playing with products in your make-up bag?

She doesn’t dress up like a ‘lady’, which I’m happy about. If she uses my eyeliner, it’s to draw whiskers and make herself look like an alley cat.

As a Canadian, are there any aspects of British life that you find bizarre?

I’ve never been a grown woman in Canada. I moved here ten years ago so my last memories there are as a university student. So I guess it’s bizarre that people don’t seem to be doing keg-stands anymore [a drinking game where someone does a handstand on a keg of beer and attempts to drink as much as possible for as long as possible].

DRESSED TO PERFECTION

Our 2016 La Bohème-themed awards promises to be an unforgettable evening with a savvy blend of vintage charm and Parisian glamour.

Katherine made quite the entrance at the NME awards earlier this year with a gorgeous leather outfit and she can’t wait to get dolled up for our awards on 27 October too.

She says: “My friend and stylist, Jen Michalski-Bray, usually brings over a few amazing outfits and I’ll choose from them depending on how I’m feeling on the night. She’s really great at knowing what suits me so I don’t have to stress about it in advance!”

Have you been baffled by any of the UK’s beauty trends or crazes?

There was a time when British women were sticking crystals to their teeth. Then Essex started the vajazzle – we don’t really do crystals where I come from.

How do you plan on bringing some sass to our awards proceedings?

I’ll probably repeat the phrase ‘you go, girl’ quite a lot.

Do you have any surprises lined up for us during your stand-up set?

Who knows what will happen between now and October? Hopefully the set will be a surprise to me too!

KATHERINE’S DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE

“I don’t wear make-up on my days off, but when I do, it’s the works – eyelashes and everything. I take it off completely with organic cotton pads and oil-infused micellar water. I exfoliate and use a moisturiser with ferulic acid and I love a clay mask at night.”
