The FDA has confirmed that it has received 58 consumer complaints relating to EOS lip balms.
Earlier this year, the Evolution of Smooth brand faced a class-action lawsuit after numerous consumers reported adverse reactions to the popular lip balm product. The lawsuit was settled at the start of February but a number of complaints were also made to the US’s FDA.
The FDA confirmed that consumers have reported reactions including blistering and cracking of the lips after using EOS lip balm products. Varieties reported to cause reactions include: Sweet Mint, Honeysuckle Honeydew, Summer Fruit, Strawberry Sorbet, Passion Fruit, Lavender, Pomegranate, Raspberry, Indian Summer Orange Blossom. Aloha Hawaii Strawberry Kiwi, St Barth’s Sunrise Pink Grapefruit, Vanilla Mint and Coconut Milk.
The regulator said that it had not been able to determine what was causing the reactions to the products as cosmetic companies are not obliged to share their safety data with the FDA. Those who complained to the FDA did not provide sufficient information to determine why some consumers experienced reactions to the product.

The FDA also disclosed that it had discovered some violations related to good manufacturing practices during its inspection. The regulator did not say what the violations were, although it said that these did not explain the reports of allergic reactions.
The FDA is now instructing any consumers who have experienced adverse reactions to EOS products to contact the FDA’s MedWatch reporting system.
