Sales of lipsticks have increased 21% at Debenhams following the success of Candice Brown on popular TV show The Great British Bake Off.

The teacher is a fan of bright lipsticks, wearing a different shade in each episode of the show.

I’ve always worn lipstick and didn’t give it much thought while we were filming. I was far more concerned about the bakes!”

The Candice Lip

Debenhams says that dark shades have been particularly popular after the show’s launch, including Chanel’s Rouge Allure Ink in Experiement and Urban Decay’s Mega Matte in Hex.

Caron Keane, National Make-up Manager for Education and Events at Urban Decay, said: “A lot of our customers are huge Bake Off fans, so they’ve been coming in all season long to try and get the perfect Candice lip.”

Brown told Cosmetics Business’: “Mac, Charlotte Tilbury and NARS are my go-to brands. I use everything from nude to bright, old-fashioned reds. The only colour I don’t wear is coral, but I’m happy to try anything. I do love a matte lipstick.”

She added: “I’ve always worn lipstick and didn’t give it much thought while we were filming. I was far more concerned about the bakes!”

A new range?

Rumours have also circulated that the star will be creating her own range of beauty products after winning the series finale.

Brown said: “I’ve no plans at the moment, but wouldn’t that be brilliant!”

Bestselling lipsticks at Debenhams include Mac, closely followed by the freshly launched Kat Von D. The brand was new to the UK last month and saw sales of more than £15,000 in its first week. A third of this was said to be spent on lipsticks.

Brown confirmed that she wore Mac’s Ruby Woo during the show’s Bread Week. She added: “For the final I went old fashioned and mixed Ruby Woo with Christian Dior number one.”

Increasing sales

The launch of Kat Von D Beauty at the retailer has further helped boost lipstick sales, with the brand said to be driving sales of £100,000 a week.

Kat Von D is now Debenham’s best-selling beauty brand, creating a wider uplift across the store’s health and beauty department since its launch.
