Fossils of extinct algae have unique physical properties

Mineral producer Imerys have developed ImerCare 400D grade from natural diatomaceous earth (DE), a silica-based mineral derived from fossilised diatoms that is mined from dry lake or sea beds. The compound is microporous and highly absorbent, making it ideal for use in personal care products such as deodorants and anti-perspirants.

ImerCare 400D can absorb 220g of oil per 100g of product, and owes its high absorbency of water and oil to the very high surface area of its mineral particles (averaging 11 microns in diameter) “a result of the unique morphology of the deposit from which this specific DE product is mined,” according to the company.

The product has a soft feel, mattifying effect and gentle abrasiveness; and helps accelerate sweat drying while reducing body odour. It has multiple applications, including in bath products, soaps, cleansing products, scrubs and foundations.

ImerCare is a natural product and is untreated with chemicals. It was developed in compliance with cosmetic directive regulation (EC) n° 1223/2009 and EcoCert certified.
