Etsy, the online marketplace for handmade products, is becoming the go-to site for beauty consumers. Emily Bidwell, Merchandising Manager explains its strategy

Is demand for handmade cosmetics on Etsy growing?
Absolutely. We are seeing a lot of demand for small batch and one of a kind handmade cosmetics. It started as a niche market but is now in the spotlight with a wider audience. These consumers are increasingly likely to check out independent brands.

Do you think this is part of a wider trend at all?
I think on the highest level we are seeing a trend for natural aesthetics and materials. This runs across all categories, and it has created a real shift in how beauty is defined. The trend speaks to the values of Etsy’s consumers who are looking for back-to-basic alternatives over synthetic and over-processed products.

What are your customers looking for in their cosmetics?
I think our customers want personalisation and value direct contact with the people making the products. They are also looking for holistic cosmetics, made from natural ingredients that also promote a sense of well-being and good health.
