FloraGLO Lutein Topical protects against high energy visible light

Kemin has announced that its FloraGLO Lutein Topical ingredient is effective at shielding skin against high energy visible (HEV) light, both natural and man-made (like that used to illuminate the screens of electronic devices).

“We have long known that HEV light, more commonly called blue light, has adverse effects on human skin cells such as inducing their cytotoxicity, decreasing their proliferation and generating oxidative stress,” said Satish Nayak, Research and Development Director for the Personal Care division at Kemin Industries.

Kemin conducted in vitro studies to identify the blue light absorbing capacity of FloraGLO Lutein Topical at different concentrations. The results showed that when human epidermal keratinocyte (HEK) and human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cells were exposed to blue light in presence of FloraGLO Lutein Topical, cell viability was improved by 35%-45 % compared with the blue light control.

Also, results showed less ROS generation in skin cells treated with FloraGLO Lutein Topical when exposed to blue light; FloraGLO Lutein Topical was able to reduce by 44%-60 % the ROS release in HEK and by 53%-58% in HDF.
