Warner Brothers threatens legal action

US cosmetics brand LASplash is changing the name of several shades of lipstick at the request of Warner Brothers, which owns the Harry Potter brand.

LASplash had been selling a range of products with names very similar to a number of characters from JK Rowling's Harry Potter series. Priced $14 each, the range included a number of colours including deep purple called Bellatrix, a pink named Hermione and a dark navy called Sirius.

The range proved popular with fans on social media, but Warner Brothers recently contacted the brand alleging that the line was an infringement of its copyright. The company demanded that LASplash remove the names from its products.

LASplash also recently introduced a range of 12 lipsticks with names such as Aurora, Esmerelda and Nala. The range was reported by several media outlets, including Cosmopolitan, InStyle and The Huffington Post, as being Disney-Princess inspired.

The brand has since announced that it will be changing the names of both the Harry Potter and Disney shades. In a statement shared on its Instagram page, the company said: "We must make it clear that LASplash is not associated with Harry Potter or Disney according to the latest media write ups. LASplash has decided to change our product names to avoid confusion."

Several of the brand's fans expressed disappointed at the change, but LASplash stressed that the shades would still be available under different names. It added: "We need everyone's support and we will continue to make wonderful products here at LASplash."
