Cosmetics giant to replace 354 lightbulbs with LED alternatives to increase pedestrian safety and cut environmental impact

L’Oréal USA has announced plans to upgrade all 354 street lamps throughout Hudson River Park in New York City, US, with sustainable LED lightbulbs, after recently moving to the area.

In partnership with non-profit organisation Friends of Hudson River Park, L’Oréal is due to finish the installation by November, having changed the first light bulb in July on Pier 45 in Chelsea.

All of the lightbulbs are located along the park’s esplanade, spanning near four miles in length along Manhattan’s west side.

Frederic Rozé, President & CEO of L’Oréal USA, said: “As new residents of the West Side at Hudson Yards, it’s particularly important for us to give back to our vibrant new neighborhood.

“We are proud that the Lights by L’Oréal programme will make the beautiful Hudson River Park an even safer and more sustainable place for our employees and the community to enjoy.”

As well as providing a better-lit environment, one of the main motivations for the initiative is reducing environmental impact.

The new bulbs will last 50,000 hours, five times longer than traditional bulbs.

By making the swap, the companies hope to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions of roughly 350,000lbs per year and a reduction of energy use; the bulbs will automatically turn on at dusk when lux levels fall belo 500 and turn off when they exceed 700.

Tribeca resident and Manhattan Youth President Bob Townley, who is also a CB1 Board Member and Chair of the Hudson River Park Trust Advisory Council, added: “As an advocate for both safety and sustainability in Hudson River Park, I am grateful for L’Oréal’s generous contribution.”
