Medik8’s Firewall promises an antioxidant high

Medik8 says its new Firewall Broad Spectrum Super Antioxidant exceeds the performance of its closest competition by at least five times. It’s a bold claim but Medik8 founder, pharmacologist Elliot Isaacs says the claim is backed by science. “We’ve tested our product,” he says. “There’s nothing revolutionary in that other than the fact that we’ve actually we’ve done it. Many products use a lot of great ingredients but for whatever reason they aren’t necessarily working together and the final product isn’t clinically tested.”

This broad spectrum antioxidant is said to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin, age spots and skin discolouration while also protecting against future signs of ageing by attacking free radicals and therefore maintaining collagen levels. Skin tone, texture and hydration are all said to be improved, resulting in firmer skin and a youthful glow.

In developing Firewall Isaacs says he deliberately chose to work with the same laboratory and researchers used by the much discussed BBC Horizon programme that investigated cosmetics claims last year.

The nanoemulsion formulation incorporates a patented anti-ageing complex called Cusodase-P comprising a blend of actives said to be 40 times stronger than vitamin C. In also contains copper chelates and superoxide dismutase and catalase mimetics, both of which are patented and function as anti-ageing peptides.

To ensure the formulation is only activated on use, the plastic packaging comprises two airtight cylinders with separate actuators that are pressed simultaneously to produce the correct dose. “it never fails to amuse me when I see antioxidants in jars,” says Isaacs. “Once they’ve been opened a few times there’s no activity left.”

Firewall is available worldwide in selected outlets and retails at £89.

Medik8 is a Pangaea Laboratories brand. Other Medik8 products include cleansers, moisturisers and correcting products. The company says research is ongoing to improve the Firewall technology.
