Beauty encompassing electricity and energy is set to drive innovation

Mintel Beauty & Personal Care has announced the key trend it believes will dominate the C&T industry in 2012: beauty that’s plugged in. The market intelligence company has dubbed the trend ‘kinetique’ and says that it encompasses the use of electricity and energy in beauty.

“We’re seeing this trend manifest itself in several ways,” said Mintel global skin care analyst Nica Lewis. “From the next generation of at home beauty devices that harness energy and light to new ingredients that boost cellular energy, beauty brands are giving consumers more power and vitality for better results.”

Mintel expects the at home beauty device market, already established in the US and Japan, to take off in Europe as local manufacturers develop innovative light and laser based solutions for anti-ageing in anticipation of consumer demand.

The coming year will also see a surge in the use of beauty ingredients that harness or boost cellular energy, such as sugar or oxygen, as well as beauty ingredients that limit or shield the skin from high energy blue or violet light.

POS and packaging elements also form a key part of the trend, according to Mintel and sound, video and QR codes embedded in beauty packaging will start to make more of a mark in the near future.
