New European commissioners announced

New EU health and environment commissioners will influence the cosmetics sector, says Keith Nuthall


The new team of European commissioners scheduled to take office on November 1, who will impact European Union policy affecting the cosmetics sector, was announced today.

The incoming president of the Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, nominated Vytenis Andriukaitis, of Lithuania, as EU health commissioner. He is a former health minister of his country. Also the Czech Republic’s Věra Jourová will be in charge of consumer protection. She is currently the Czech minister for regional development. Finally, Malta’s Karmenu Vella will become environment commissioner. He could have important influence over the development of EU chemical controls as the next round of REACH registration is staged by 2018.
