New method to increase substance solubility revealed

Process enables insoluble substances to be mixed with water

A research project at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel has developed a new manufacturing process that will enable the cosmetics industry to mix thus far insoluble substances with water.

Researcher Katy Margulis-Goshen says ingredients such as oil can be dissolved in water if broken into nanoparticles. In her system they can be stored in dry powder and later added to water where they dissolve and create a final product. A university communiqué said the innovation will change certain processes in cosmetic manufacturing. “In cosmetics active cosmetic ingredients for dermal delivery are usually also water resistant, so that incorporating them into non-greasy, water-based formulations is of great importance,” she said.
