Researchers at the University of Liverpool are developing an irritant test for mascara using protozoa. It is hoped that it might provide an alternative to animal testing.

“Mascara is a mild irritant that causes a range of medical problems,” said the authors of the study. “Animal models to predict ocular irritation have, however, been questioned at a number of levels, and there is a continued need to develop in vitro testing methods.”
