Senior Development Chemist – South - £28–£30,000

Experience in developing cosmetics and toiletry formulations from first principles through to scale-up and subsequent full scale manufacture

Experience in developing cosmetics and toiletry formulations from first principles through to scale-up and subsequent full scale manufacture is essential for this role, preferably in the bath, body, hair and skincare products, with an in-depth knowledge of raw material availability and functionality and trends. A knowledge of UK cosmetic legislation and awareness of European and global market regulatory requirements is key.

With the ability to efficiently plan, organise and manage your workload proactively, you will have proven project management experience, as well as the ability to manage the workloads of junior team  members and assist in their development/progression within the team. You will act as mentor to a junior chemist, supporting them with their individual workload and assisting them  with their professional development and deputise for the Product Development Manager in their absence.

Educated to degree level qualification or a Diploma in Cosmetic science, you will have good verbal communication and interpersonal skills, be able to liaise and work with personnel at all levels, and the ability to react and respond positively to changes in priority and workload and to retain focus, maintaining a calm demeanour under pressure.

Reporting to the Product Development Manager you will assist in the design, development  and preparation of new product formulations meeting project briefs within the budgets provided and ensuring compliance with both regulatory and customer requirements at all times.

Your responsibilities will include the management of stability and packaging compatibility testing programs liaising with external contract laboratories as required and arranging performance testing or safety assessments. You will be performing lab scale production of in-house formulated products, liaising directly with the manufacturing and process development departments on scale-up issues and process improvement.

You will assist in the maintenance of the Product Development database for in-house formulated products, and provide technical advice both internally and externally to customers as required.

Maintenance  of accurate up-to-date records of all work is key and you will ensure all paperwork is well documented and to the required guidelines. You will use computerised information systems to retrieve, update and input all relevant data.

Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft PowerPoint is required.
