Shiseido’s China business is to undergo a major overhaul that reflects both the rapid growth and increasing sophistication of the market as well as the company’s own missteps.
By next spring, the company plans to open a new research lab in Shanghai, where it will develop products more attuned to the preferences of Chinese consumers. At the same time, it will make deep staff cuts at its Chinese business division in Japan, which currently employs about 100 people.
