It might not last long in the kitchen cupboard, but chocolate is certainly sticking around in the cosmetics sector.

As consumers continue to take interest in health foods cocoa flavanols are jumping into beauty formulators’ mixing pots.

Research in The Journal of Nutrition suggests the consumption of cocoa flavanols might have benefits for photo-aged skin, with high flavanol supplementation of 326mg/day found to boost skin hydration and smoothness. These observations, along with a raft of others, are impacting shelf space, with raw cacao supplements now on sale claiming to improve skin’s appearance and give health benefits.
