Walmart reveals further details of sustainable chemicals policy

Published: 4-Apr-2014

Suppliers will be required to phase out ten chemical ingredients

US retailer Walmart has added details about its sustainable chemicals policy for suppliers of personal care and cleaning products. The policy, first announced in September, will require suppliers to phase out ten high-priority chemical ingredients, disclose priority chemicals on product labels and disclose all ingredients online.

Walmart suppliers will be required to disclose fragrance ingredients and to supply ingredient information to a third-party compliance company, The Wercs. By 15 January, Walmart will require suppliers to provide online public ingredient disclosure for items sold at any of the firm’s outlets. The firm itself will also begin to label its own brand cleaning products in accordance with the US EPA’s Design for the Environment Safer Product Labeling programme, “to the extent possible”.

The new policy, said the firm, applies to the Walmart and Sam’s Club US consumables business, including the personal care, beauty, cosmetics and household cleaner categories.
