At the end of November, a new fragrance house will launch in Canada, Zoologist Perfumes. The niche brand will unveil three unisex fragrances in the initial launch: Beaver, Panda and Rhinoceros.

Although none of the fragrances contain ingredients of animal origin, the concept is to place animalic notes at the heart of fragrances rather than using them in the base. The bottles feature illustrations of animals in tuxedo jackets.

Beaver, created by perfumer Chris Bartlett, has head notes of linden tree, ‘fresh air’ accord and light citruses; heart notes of castoreum, iris, smoke and roots; and base notes of animal musk, ash, cedar and amber.

Panda, created by perfumer Paul Kiler and inspired by the imaginary smell of a panda’s habitat, has head notes of lemon, bamboo, Sichuan pepper, green tea, mandarin and zisu leaves; heart notes of osmanthus, orange blossom, lily, mimosa and incense; and base notes of sandalwood, pemou root, fresh musk, bourbon, Haiti vetiver and moss.

Meanwhile, Rhinoceros, also by Kiler, has head notes of rum, bergamot, elemi, lavender, sage, angelica and conifer needles; heart notes of pine, tobacco, immortal, geranium, oud and Chinese cedar; and base notes of vetiver, sandalwood amber, smoke, leather and musk.

The fragrances will be available as a 60ml edp or in sample vials of 2ml from the company’s website; pricing has not yet been announced.
