Thai cosmetic manufacturers import an estimated 90% of their ingredients so it’s no wonder that many international ingredient suppliers are coveting the Thai market. in-cosmetics Asia 2010 in Bangkok (2-4 November) is expecting up to 200 exhibitors, a 50% increase on 2009, and many ingredient launches.

Last year’s event in Singapore attracted 64% international visitors and based on this organisers are expecting a sizeable pan-Asian audience this year too, including attendees from Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Indonesia, China, Vietnam, India and Japan.

In addition to the show, the 2010 event will include a number of new features:

Facial Beauty Conference
Research company Datamonitor says Asia Pacific accounts for 39.3% of the global facial care market’s value.
Presentations at this new conference will include skin-whitening with presentations covering antioxidants (Dr Nopadon, president of the Thai Society of Dermatology); non invasive measurements of skin colour (Fabrice Perin, SpinControl Asia); and the effect of marine plant extracts on melanogenesis (Pierre-Yves Morvan, Codif International).
Four of the world’s ten fastest ageing populations are in Asia (Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Hong Kong) and Asia is poised to become the oldest continent by 2050. An anti-ageing section at this conference will cover ageing & genes (Dr Helen Knaggs, Nuskin); differences between Caucasian and Asian skins (Dr Panvipa Krisdaphong, Dermscan); colourless carotenoids and their role in stabilising sunscreens (Dr Liki von Oppen-Bezalel, IBR); and new approaches to improve skin firmness and elasticity (Dr Gilles Pauly, Laboratoires Serobiologiques).
Google reports that Singaporeans hold the world record for internet searches on the word ‘acne’ in percentage terms and the final part of the conference will hopefully shed some light on this subject. Topics will include physiology of acne (Alain Khaiat, Seers Consulting); acne regulations in Asia (Simon Young, Unilever); and guide formulations for effective products (Alain Saintrond, Creations Couleurs).

Innovation Zone
A highly popular feature at in-cosmetics in Europe, the Innovation Zone is now being rolled out in Asia. Visitors will be able to view the latest ingredient launches from the likes of Bioland, Croda, IRB, Lubrizol, Mibelle and Regeron.

Regulations for Exporting to Europe Workshop
Breaking into the European market can present challenges. Shiseido, Uka from Japan and Giffarine from Thailand managed it. But how can other Asian companies achieve it?
Help is at hand. Led by Jean-Jacques Bourgois from Biorius, an international consultancy in technical and regulatory matters, this one-day workshop will navigate attendees through the minefield of the EU Cosmetic Directive.
The workshop will cover safety assessment, prohibited or restricted ingredients, animal testing and marketing bans as well as key aspects of the new EU Cosmetics Regulation (the EU recast) and specific issues Asian exporters must address, including the quality and safety of products (GMP standards and safety information file). Guidance will also be given on compiling the Product Information File, the status and function of the (legally) ‘responsible person’ and the hot topic of nanomaterials.

Basic Formulation & Advanced Formulation Workshops
Ex IFSCC president and a leading authority on cosmetic science Dr Johann Wiechers will lead these two workshops to cater for junior and more experienced formulators. The Basic Formulation Workshop will include both theory and practical work whereas the Advanced Formulation option will focus on theory only.
As in previous years in-cosmetics Asia will include a programme of Innovation Seminars and one of Marketing Trends.
Companies speaking at the Innovation Seminars at the show this year and sharing their latest discoveries include B&T, Bio-Nest, Croda, DSM, Ichimaru, IRB, Lipotec, Lubrizol, Regeron, Zschimmer & Schwarz as well as Vitamin C60.
This year’s Marketing Trends presentations will feature three streams: trends, country focus and practical advice. Trends will include global beauty trends (Euromonitor); natural trends and sustainability (Kline); latest trends in personal care ingredients (Kline); and emerging Asian beauty trends (Insight Asia). The regional focus will be on India (Indian Society of Cosmetic Chemists); Vietnam (Johnson & Johnson); and marketing to Muslim countries, including the topic of halal cosmetics (International Halal Integrity Alliance). And the practical advice will be on the subjects of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement opening up marketing opportunities (Access Asia); powerful websites (Happy Marketer) and video marketing your cosmetic brand (Happy Marketer).

Visitor registration goes live on 30 June at www.in-cosmeticsasia.com
