In October, a consumer filed a $25,000 lawsuit against Sephora, after claiming a lipstick sample gave her oral herpes.

Since Elena Davoyan announced she was suing the LVMH-owned retailer for emotional distress in addition to liability, negligence and intentional infliction, the internet has been awash with articles providing beauty fans with tips on how to avoid germs when trying on products in-store.

So how can make-up brands keep their customers safe and, in turn, stopping stories like Sephora’s happening to them?
