Conflict and constraint has hit the Lebanese hair care market, but it is still seen as a trendsetter in the Middle East

The Lebanese hair care market has been in a state of flux over the past six years, reflecting the instability in the Levant. Following the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011, the country’s hair care market grew as Lebanon took in more than one million Syrian refugees. But the good times have not always been maintained.

“The hair care market has seen strong fluctuations in recent years, with good growth during 2011 to 2013, due to the huge influx of Syrian refugees,” says Natalia Gorzawski, a Research Analyst for the Middle East at Euromonitor International.

But from 2013, as the wider economic fallout from the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings, particularly in Syria, have impacted the Lebanese economy, the market has declined as consumer spending tightened.
