2020 goal already exceeded

Aluminium producer Alcoa has announced that it has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, exceeding its original 2020 goal. The results have been released in conjunction with the company’s 2010 Sustainability Report, examining Alcoa’s progress on the sustainability of its products, resourced and operations.

Significant achievements that the report highlighted included Alcoa reducing the carbon footprint of the company’s operations by 7% in 2010. This was a 22% reduction on 2005’s levels and beat the 20% goal set for 2020. The same year Alcoa received silver level Cradle to Cradle certification for primary aluminium.

Commented Kevin Anton, Alcoa’s chief sustainability officer: “At Alcoa we take a long-term approach to sustainability. In 2010 we took our efforts to a new level with the creation of my position and a renewed focus on the development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy.

“We implemented a new set of sustainability targets to drive progress in our business to 2020 and beyond and developed a scorecard to align our sustainability targets across each of our businesses.”
