Renewable farnesene produced in Brazil

Amyris is to start producing Biofene on an industrial scale later this month. The renewable farnesene which can be used in a broad range of products including squalene, base oil and finished lubricants, will be produced in a facility in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, which Amyris will operate.

“The completion of our first Biofene production facility is a landmark not only for Amyris but also for the renewable products sector,” commented John Melo, ceo. “With this milestone we are demonstrating that engineered yeast can be used to produce high-value hydrocarbon molecules on a commercial scale. This achievement reinforces our goal of providing renewable alternatives to petroleum to transform the chemicals industry, extend the world’s fuel supply and contribute to the betterment of our environment.”
