Sales of colour cosmetics in China are soaring as lipstick and complexion enhancing make-up lures consumers

Sales of colour cosmetics have historically trailed skin care purchases in China, but this may be set to change as make-up sales have risen at a rapid pace in recent years.

According to Mintel, China’s colour cosmetics market has maintained a value growth rate of over 10% during 2014-2016. In 2016 it grew by 11% to Chinese Yuan Renminbi CNY27.04bn (US$4.08bn) and is expected to accelerate by 13% in 2017.

Furthermore, a survey by Mintel in April this year found that 62% of urban Chinese women claim to wear make-up every year, a significant rise from the 38% of women surveyed just a year before.

International companies still dominate the colour cosmetics market in China, occupying seven positions within the top ten in terms of value sales in 2016, according to Euromonitor International.
