Ask Heidi: I am a graduate looking for a job in beauty, but Covid is making it hard. What should I do?

In this month’s real-life advice column, recruitment and careers specialist Heidi Bannister helps one reader prepare for job hunting in the 'new normal'

Q: I am a recent graduate and it has been my ambition to work in the beauty industry for as long as I can remember.

But Covid is making it hard to get a job as it seems like there are so few companies hiring at junior level.

I've applied for all sorts of roles, and send out numerous applications every day, but I seem to be getting nowhere and I'm starting to lose motivation and confidence in my abilities.

Where am I going wrong and what should I do next?

A: I’m sorry to hear you're having a tough time. I’ve spoken to several young people who are passionate about the beauty industry but are struggling to get into it right now.

Many companies are reviewing and adapting their plans to meet the latest business requirements and Covid-19 restrictions. Some have reduced or restructured their teams and sadly, others have closed. With a global downturn on top of Covid-19, it will be some time before things return to anything like normal in the beauty or any other industry.
