Luvigel STAR and Luvigel Advanced are two new polymers from BASF designed to thicken skin care and hair styling products, respectively.
Luvigel STAR is a polyurethane-based rheology modifier that provides high thickening performance, even under challenging conditions. The ingredient is salt stable, can be used in a broad pH range, does not react with cationic, anionic or zwitterionic surfactants and emulsifiers and does not require neutralisation. A broad range of viscosities can be achieved with Luvigel STAR and as it requires no pre-swelling and can be added at any stage of the process due to its liquid form, it also simplifies the production of cosmetic formulations.
BASF’s other new product, Luvigel Advanced, is a polymeric thickener for hair styling products. It provides thickening, conditioning and advanced setting properties, producing a strong hold when combined with other styling polymers even at high humidity.
Due to its cationic nature, Luvigel Advanced imparts a conditioning effect, eliminating the need for additional conditioning polymers, while its boosting effect allows for less styling polymer to be used without decreasing conditioning performance. This results in reduced flaking.
