Benefit research reveals brows show true feelings

New research from cosmetics brand Benefit highlights that brows are key to decoding emotions and are the most expressive part of the face

Benefit Cosmetics has partnered with a Professor at Canada’s University of Lethbridge to conduct research into brow recognition.

Professor of Neuroscience Dr. Javid Sadr who conducted the research with Benefit Cosmetics explains: “Eyebrows can communicate the full spectrum of emotions from aggression to fear to joy.”

Dr. Sadhr conducted research into the role of eyebrows in face recognition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

His team studied facial-expressions by separating the face into three compartments: upper, middle and lower.

The researchers studied the six universally recognised emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust and surprise.

The upper compartment of the face, which contains the brows, was found to play a key role in displaying each emotion.

Benefit Cosmetics expanded its Brow Collection with 13 new products last year. The brand spent three years developing the range, which is said to include high performing formulas, custom-designed applicators and mistake-proof shades so consumers can become their own brow experts.
