The world may have officially welcomed “the age of big butts”, according to one Vogue article last year, but it seems that one area of the female body that is still under intense scrutiny, if it shows even the merest hint of flab, is the stomach. And French women are up there with the most scrutinising of all. According to a study by the Ipsos Institute in 2012, 41% of French respondents didn’t like their stomach, with 57% within this group stating that it was their biggest body concern. And another survey, by Ifop in 2013 on 4001 French people found that for 56% of women the stomach was the body part that they liked the least – a far higher figure than the second least favourite, as only 29% nominated their bottoms. The survey concluded that one in two French women are ready to spend more money on the appearance of their bellies than they currently do.
