Whether it’s new shades, textures or finishes, colour cosmetics has always been one of the categories most focused on the new and the next. Products drop on a daily basis and production cycles are accelerating, fuelling a market that is worth nearly $70bn worldwide.
Yet as concerns over waste and climate change have hit consumers with more urgency in 2019, the rumblings of a new consumer attitude has emerged that raises the question: are consumers applying the breaks to beauty?
Gabriella Beckwith, Research Analyst – Beauty and Fashion at Euromonitor International, tells Cosmetics Business: “One of the key challenges in colour cosmetics is that consumers in major markets such as the UK and US have been on somewhat of a ‘beauty diet’ over the last year. Consumers are curbing back on spending and investing in fewer products as they embrace the trend for ‘no make-up’ make-up looks.
