Croda unveils KeraDyn HH

Delivering healthy hair dynamics

Croda is proud to unveil the launch of an innovative hair conditioning agent, KeraDyn HH. Proven to deliver ‘healthy hair dynamics’ to damaged hair, KeraDyn HH provides the hair care sector with a new, exciting marketing platform for the next generation of hair care products.

You Can Tell Hair is Healthy by the Way it Moves
KeraDyn HH has been designed to boost the dynamics of damaged hair. This new, patented ingredient enhances fibre alignment and reduces friction between hair strands for the freedom of movement that only healthy hair enjoys.

How does it work?
18 MEA (18-methyl eicosanoic acid) is the most abundant lipid found on the hair surface. Damage to the surface of the hair through chemical treatments etc can deplete the hair’s lipid layer which contributes significantly to inter-fibre friction. The multiple branched chain structure of Keradyn HH is designed to provide a lubricating effect on the surface of the hair and the polyamine backbone provides multiple points of attachment to the hair which makes it highly substantive and an effective agent to reduce inter-fibre friction.

Global appeal
Hair types and hair treatment trends vary significantly around the world. In order to demonstrate the efficacy of KeraDyn HH globally, this product has been tested on hair from different regions damaged by regionally relevant chemical treatments.

Hair Dynamics Test
The Hair Dynamics Test is a unique method of evaluation developed by Croda in conjunction with the Centre for Visual Computing at the University of Bradford in the UK. The test digitally records hair motion using a high definition video camera. Hair tresses attached to a sliding bar are moved horizontally backwards and forwards at a set speed. The key parameter measured is the maximum swing height of the tresses.

The following hair types were tested using the Hair Dynamics Test:
Bleached European hair
The swing height of hair tresses treated with the leading brand conditioner increased by 2.7 times compared to the untreated tresses, whereas the swing height of the tresses treated with the KeraDyn HH conditioner increased by 4.5 times.
As a control, the base conditioner without containing KeraDyn HH was applied to bleach damaged hair and tested for its efficacy in improving hair movement. The swing heights recorded demonstrated that there is no significant difference in hair movement when bleached tresses are treated with the base conditioner alone versus bleached hair with no treatment.
Chemically straightened Latin American hair
Treatment of relaxer damaged hair tresses with a conditioner containing KeraDyn HH generates hair that swings twice as high as the unconditioned hair tresses.
Coloured Asian hair
The swing height of the coloured Asian hair was 24% lower than virgin Asian hair. Following a conditioning treatment containing KeraDyn HH, the swing height increased to only 2% lower than virgin Asian hair.

Salon study
In addition to the Hair Dynamics Test, a salon study was carried out in order to evaluate the sensory attributes of KeraDyn HH. This product was formulated into a hair conditioner base and evaluated against the conditioner base without KeraDyn HH as a benchmark. A half head test method was used with 18 females with medium to long, damaged hair. Each attribute was assessed on a 9 point scale and the average score were compared by analysis of variance.

The results of the salon study showed that the conditioner containing KeraDyn HH reduced tangling and gave easier combing without leaving an unpleasant coated feel to the hair. On both wet and dry hair it was possible to see better hair alignment with the conditioner containing KeraDyn HH in comparison to the control.
