Demand for colour cosmetics sees surge in India

Lipsticks in particular gain popularity amongst Indian consumers

Demand in India for lipsticks and other make-up products is reportedly booming. Stocks of L'Oréal Paris's Color Riche Le Vernis recently ran out four months after it was launched in major outlets.

The demand-trend is put down to the increasing numbers of working women who need to consider their appearance in the workplace and who are exploring new possibilities with cosmetic products as they enter the country. Satyaki Ghosh, director of L'Oréal India's consumer products arm, has said that the trend has been supported by aggressive pricing.

Ghosh added that the group has adopted a sachet strategy for cosmetic products - allowing consumers to sample the products at mass market prices and then persuading them to upgrade.
