French MPs have voted to reduce the country’s twice-yearly sales period from six weeks to four, but with careful wording that allows this to be changed easily in the future. The annual sales in France are regulated by law.

“We must be able to leave some latitude to the regulator,” said Bruno Le Maire, France’s Minister of Economy and Finance. “ We will try four weeks and then we will see over the years and seasons if it's the right amount. The length [of sales period] is a balance that has been struck between small traders and supermarkets…in a context of declining revenues in the face of the proliferation of promotions throughout the year and the growth of e-commerce.”
