A study by market research firm Come & Stay for online retailer Etat Pur  has shown that 67 per cent of French women now buy cosmetics online, with 30 per cent of those questioned making regular online purchases and 40 per cent even buying brands they did not know.

Own-brand sites such as Clarins and Yves Rocher were the most-favoured sites, with over 70 per cent of online purchasers buying from these sites. The next-most popular were the sites of perfumery chains such as Sephora and Marionnaud, with 39 per cent of buyers using these, closely followed by 'ventes privees' (private sales) sites such as BrandAlley and Vente Privee with just over 34 per cent.

Fewer buyers bought from parapharmacies on line or promotional sites such as Groupon, while specialist retailers like Mademoiselle Bio were patronised by only a little over 10 per cent of purchasers. Bringing up the rear came beauty box websites, supermarket websites and teleshopping sites.

The average French buyer spends between €30 and €60 a month on cosmetics and price was rated as a 'very important' consideration by 66 per cent of those questioned. It was rated 'unimportant' for only 1 per cent of buyers.

The vast majority of purchases took place on users' own computers in the evening, and information about products, promotions and delivery deadlines, and ease-of-use of websites were all rated as 'important' or 'very important' by over half of buyers.
