This week marks 50 years since the first Earth Day campaign on 22 April 1970.
First launched in the US by Senator Gaylord Nelson and Harvard graduate Denis Hayes, campaigning for environmental reform, the annual event has spread to more than 90 countries with one billion people participating in Earth Day activities each year.
