The US personal care product sector is counting the cost of retaliatory tariffs, announced 18 September, by the Chinese government on American beauty exports.

This follows the US Trade Representative (USTR) confirming that America will be imposing 10% tariffs on a wide range of products (including personal care exports) from China. These duties will be imposed from 24 September, rising to 25% on 1 January 2019.

China’s immediate reaction could harm America’s lucrative personal care product trade with Chinese consumers – which (along with essential oil sales) earned US exporters US$523m in 2017, according to international trade data.
