IFC and UEBT to encourage biodiversity awareness in Latin America

Partnership part of $1.9m joint programme


The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Union for Ethical BioTrade (UEBT) have announced an agreement to increase private sector awareness of biodiversity and strengthen market frameworks for its protection in Latin America.

The agreement was made at the Rio+20 Conference, Brazil, and makes up a $1.9m joint programme as part of IFC’s BioTrade Initiative, developed with financing from the governments of Denmark and the Netherlands. The partnership will help preserve natural resource assets that are vital to the sustainable development of high poverty regions such as the Amazon forest, Cerrado savannas and Caatinga drylands.

IFC Brazil country manager, Loy Pires, said: “The private and public sectors need to work hand in hand to promote sustainable development for the benefit of communities and businesses, and to safeguard the environment’s natural assets for future generations.”
