The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) recently announced that the UK’s aerosol filling figures increased to 1,474.7 million cans in 2013. Chief Executive Dr John Morris talks Cosmetic News Weekly about the trends in the sector.

What is your verdict on 2013’s filling figures?

There was a 1% dip in the volume of personal care aerosols filled in 2013. But the UK still accounts for one in five of all personal care aerosols produced worldwide. When you look at the breakdown, about 70% of fillings in the UK are orientated towards personal care, so this is a huge sector for the UK. This is not necessarily the case for other parts of Europe or the world.

Does the 5.8% rise in the number of antiperspirants filled and 8.4% decline in deodorants reflect changing preferences?

We have to be careful when we talk about consumer preferences. We know that there are 650 million consumed aerosols in the UK and when you set that against the filling figures, you can see that not everything which is consumed in the UK is necessarily filled in the UK: 65% of the aerosols filled in the UK are destined to go abroad. So it’s hard to make overall trend predictions.
