Korres, the apothecary inspired Athens-based natural products company is a good example of
a real Greek success story – and one that has continued to do well in recent unprecedented times for the country. Katie Middleweek reports
While newspapers and television reports have recently been awash with reports of financial and political turmoil in Greece, people demonstrating in the streets and businesses going into liquidation, there has been one Greek company that has been quietly going from strength to strength, despite the adversity. Korres Natural Products was founded in 1996 by George Korres, who previously studied Pharmacy at the University of Athens. George had a great interest in natural ingredients and their uses, and after leaving university in 1989 he appropriately started work at the oldest homeopathic pharmacy in Athens. His passion for the great holistic properties of plants and flowers was then nurtured on a daily basis and he eventually started developing his own formulations, which he tested out on his friends and family.
Founding principles
In 1996 he decided to take the plunge and founded the company, which bears his name, and along with his wife Lena Korres who is the company’s brand development director, set out to bring his natural skin care philosophy to the masses. George stated at the outset that the company’s four founding principles were: to use natural and/or organic ingredients; to produce environmentally friendly skin care products; to ensure clinically tested efficacy; and to create affordable, aesthetically interesting wares.
