Consumer demand for greater guidance on the sustainability of product packaging has soared, with nine in ten shoppers now wanting the government to provide legislation on how brands detail the sustainability of a product’s packaging, according to a new survey commissioned by Pro Carton, the European Association for Carton and Cartonboard manufacturers.

The European Consumer Packaging Perceptions survey found that 88% of UK shoppers now request on-pack information that highlights how environmentally-friendly the packaging format is with nine in ten shoppers in the UK also wanting packaging to be easily recyclable.

The survey, which involved 7,000 shoppers, also found that eight in ten UK consumers over the age of 50 - traditionally a difficult age group to engage with on sustainability - thought more should be done to introduce environmentally-friendly packaging, showing a turnaround in attitudes.
