Virtual reality assistant helps consumers select products

Augmented reality specialist ModiFace has created a virtual beauty advisor that consumers can use via Facebook Messenger.

The ModiFace bot is programmed with detailed knowledge of more than 20,000 beauty products. This allows users to search for the most suitable items by conversing over Facebook’s messaging service. Consumers can ask the bot to send a list of suggested products based on brand or shade name. Using facial tracking, consumers are also able to “test out” products by sending pictures of themselves to the bot. The bot then replies to the consumers with a simulated preview of how a product will appear on their skin.

Products can also be purchased directly from the bot, with the option to preview or purchase given alongside every product suggestion. To use the virtual advisor, consumers simply have to search for ‘ModiFace’ on Facebook and send the page a message over the social network’s messaging service to converse with the bot.

“We are delighted to be the first beauty advisor launching on Facebook Messenger. We believe conversational interfaces are a great fit with shoppers interested in getting beauty advice easily on-the-go. I expect that this will be the first of many steps to expand and improve what is possible for consumers through a chat interface,” Parham Aarabi, Founder and CEO of Modiface, said.

A demonstration of how the bot can be used is available on YouTube.
