Monroe blonde to eye jewels: Top beauty looks from the 2022 Met Gala

Following this year’s ‘Gilded Glamour’ theme, attendees adopted modern twists on classic hair and make-up

The 2022 Met Gala theme, 'In America: An Anthology of Fashion' asked attendees for their take on 'Gilded Glamour', which left plenty of room open for exciting interpretations.

Couture wise, some (Sarah Jessica Parker, Billie Eilish) opted for the corsets and bustles of America’s 1870-1900 Gilded Age, while others, like Jessica Chastain, channelled the Roaring 20s.

There were also literal interpretations of ‘Gilded’, with Cardi B, Amber Valletta and Megan Thee Stallion all going for gold; singer Lizzo even wielded a golden flute to offset her black and gold embroidered coat.

But with so many celebs mining history for their outfits, it was up to hair and make-up artists to add a modern edge to proceedings.

So what were the evening’s stand out hair, make-up and beauty looks?

Break out the bleach

While arguably ‘off theme’ for 2022, Kim Kardashian has never knowingly underperformed at the Met Gala and last night was no exception.

Kardashian chose to walk the red carpet wearing the exact dress style icon Marilyn Monroe wore while singing ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’ to JFK.

To complete her Marilyn look, the naturally brunette Kardashian opted for bleach blonde, slicked back locks.

And she wasn’t the only Kardashian-Jenner sibling to break out the peroxide. Kendall Jenner contrasted bleached eyebrows with spidery false lashes in a look also adopted by Maisie Williams, who offset her white brows with a bold cat’s eye flick.

Smokey rose

A swathe of celebrities added a pretty-yet-punk twist to the traditional smokey eye by blending in reds, pinks, oranges and even a bit of rose gold to stay on theme.

Sophie Turner matched burgundy eyes to her hair colour, while, for Tessa Thompson, it was the wine-coloured eyes and lips that matched, with the eyes elevated by a touch of gold.

Nicola Coughlan, meanwhile, added a pop of pink to her smokey eye to match her pink and black feathered ensemble.

Kiki Layne likewise stayed on brand, pairing her petal adorned pink dress with pink petal eyelids.

The other popping colour for eyes was blue; Quannah Chasinghorse chose a pale pastel hue aligned with her dress, as did Caroline Wozniacki.

Janicza Bravo, meanwhile, paired a bold swatch of electric blue with pillarbox red lips.

Bejewelled eyes

This popular festival aesthetic took over the 2022 Met Gala, with attendees of all genders adding glamour via stick-on facial jewels.

Some took a subtle approach. Gemma Chan accented the corners of her eyes, while Jodie Turner-Smith drew attention to her eyebrows, and Kid Cudi popped jewels in his tear troughs as well as the corners of his eyes.

Others, like Cara Delevingne and Fredrik Robertsson, went for a ‘jewel encrusted’ eyelid.

Then there was Naomi Campbell, who truly owned this look, adorning her entire upper face with a pattern of jewels to complement the very real ones on her ears and neck.

The Gilded Age

It would be remiss to comment on Met Gala make-up and those committing themselves to a theme without flagging up Cara Delevingne, who quite literally gilded herself with gold body paint as part of her costume.

While gold pasties, body jewellery and the full Goldfinger vibe might not translate into everyday wear, expect to see an uptick in interest in body paint thanks to the woman who single-handedly brought eyebrows back last decade.

Although, if Jenner and Williams are any indication, that trend might be poised for change too.
