NPA to require certified products to contain 100% natural fragrances

Change eliminates absolutes and concretes from NPA certified products

The Natural Products Association has announced that it will require all fragrances in finished natural products to receive certification in its Natural Standard for Personal Care Products programme. The change, which will come into effect from September, eliminates the use of absolutes and concretes, which require petrochemical solvents, as well as synthetic additives.

Under the new requirement, some synthetic preservatives will be allowed. However, the association will promote the use of natural preservatives where applicable. It also intends to publish an updated allowed processes appendix, which will include extraction, expression and steam distillation to encourage such processes for fragrance mixtures.

Companies will be required to submit a qualitative list to the NPA including the INCI name and CAS number of each component in the composition. But the association says that it does not want to add extra labelling requirements for certified products, stressing it will not require anything more than following current INCI labelling procedures.

“This new requirement is the first step of many in the evolution of the standard, as the association continually moves towards strengthening the standard,” commented the NPA’s scientific and regulatory affairs manager, Cara Welch.
